Are You on a Tight Budget?

The Auto Repair Shop: Tips from Experts on Fast Fixes

Even if you are not a car enthusiast, performing a few basic maintenance tips on your vehicle will prevent multiple visits to an auto repair shop in addition to extending the lifespan of your vehicle. Below are some things that you can do yourself, which will save money and prevent many future repair costs.

Make sure to change your coolant regularly

Coolant will not last forever, you will need to change it either every 24,000 miles or 100,000 miles. If you drive using worn coolant, you will eventually need to replace your radiator, water pump and heater core.

Not performing any regular oil changes will end up costing you

Oil changes and transfer case fluid are cheap and easy to do. Replacing these, however, will end up costing you around $1,500 each, which is a high price.

Replace your air filter each year

A clogged air filter places added strain on your vehicle’s AC system and decreases heat when winter comes, which is why you need to replace it every year.

Test your coolant using a voltmeter

Test your coolant, set your voltmeter on the lowest setting, and then dip the probe into the coolant. Put the negative probe on the negative terminal on your battery, and then have someone rev your car’s engine to 2,000rpm. If the reading is .4 volts, your coolant will need replacing.

Make sure to clean any cloudy headlights

If your car has cloudy headlights, you don’t need to replace them, simply clean them using a kit.

Clean your terminals to avoid any electrical issues

Corrosion will place extra strain on the charging system, plus, it can mess with any computer systems. Cleaning them is a cheap way to prevent any electrical issues.
